Overview

VICTOR's Grain Free Yukon River Canine recipe offers a high-protein, fish-based diet primarily for active adult dogs. Formulated without common grain allergens like corn or wheat, this food centers on a blend of fish proteins to deliver the amino acids necessary for muscle development and maintenance. The 30 lb bag size is an economical choice for owners of medium to large breeds or multi-dog households seeking a premium, grain-free option. Its nutrient-dense formula means that each cup packs significant nutrition, supporting everything from healthy skin and coat, thanks to the omega fatty acids typical in fish-based foods, to sustained energy levels for playful or working dogs. This particular VICTOR recipe is designed to be highly palatable and digestible, making it a strong contender for dogs who may have sensitivities to more common poultry or beef proteins.

Best for

This high-protein, fish-forward recipe is best suited for active adult dogs of medium and large breeds who thrive on a grain-free diet. Given its formulation, it could also be a fitting option for dogs with confirmed sensitivities to poultry or grain.

Feeding guide

Feeding amounts can vary significantly based on your dog's age, breed, and daily activity level. As a general guideline, most adult dogs require about 1/2 to 1/3 cup of food per 10 pounds of body weight per day. This total amount should be split into two separate meals. Always have fresh, clean water available. This is only a starting point; it is critical to consult the specific feeding chart on the product's packaging and adjust as needed to maintain a healthy body condition.

Frequently asked questions

Is this food suitable for puppies?

The 'Canine' label suggests it is formulated for adult dogs. High-protein foods can be suitable for some puppies, but you should always look for a food specifically labeled for 'growth' or 'all life stages' to ensure it has the correct calcium and phosphorus levels for developing puppies. Consult your vet for guidance.

What does 'Yukon River' recipe imply?

'Yukon River' is a marketing name that evokes imagery of wild-caught fish like salmon. This recipe uses a blend of fish proteins as its primary animal ingredient, making it rich in the omega fatty acids commonly found in fish.

My dog has a sensitive stomach. Is this a good choice?

For many dogs with sensitivities, a grain-free, fish-based protein can be highly digestible. It avoids common triggers like chicken or wheat. However, every dog is an individual. The best approach is to transition slowly to any new food over 7-10 days to see how your dog's system handles it.

What is the VPRO Blend mentioned by VICTOR?

VPRO is VICTOR's proprietary blend of supplements that is included in most of their formulas. It's designed to promote superior digestibility, a strong immune system, and healthy skin and coat by including prebiotics, probiotics, and other minerals.

How does this compare to other VICTOR formulas?

The Yukon River recipe is VICTOR's primary fish-based, grain-free option. It differs from their other lines like the 'Classic' series, which includes grains, or other 'Grain Free' recipes that might use beef, chicken, or other proteins. This formula is specifically for those seeking a fish-centered diet.

Is this a limited ingredient diet (LID)?

While it is grain-free and focuses on fish protein, it is not strictly a limited ingredient diet. It contains a blend of different fish sources and a variety of other ingredients to ensure complete nutrition. If your dog requires a true LID, you may need a formula with a single protein and a single carbohydrate source.
