Overview

This 30 lb bag of Nutro Natural Choice Adult Dry Dog Food features their Lamb & Brown Rice Recipe, a popular choice for adult dogs. The formula leads with lamb, a high-quality protein source that also provides a rich flavor many dogs enjoy. It's paired with brown rice, a whole-grain carbohydrate that supplies steady energy. This recipe is designed to support the nutritional needs of active adult dogs, focusing on wholesome ingredients without relying on common fillers like corn, wheat, or soy. Nutro positions this food as a "natural" choice, which typically means it's made with ingredients sourced from nature and supplemented with essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients for complete and balanced nutrition. It aims to promote healthy digestion and a shiny coat, common goals for premium adult dog food formulas.

Key features

  • Formulated with real lamb as the primary protein source to support muscle maintenance.
  • Includes brown rice, a highly digestible whole grain for energy.
  • Made with non-GMO ingredients and avoids chicken by-product meal, corn, wheat, or soy.
  • Designed to support whole-body health for adult dogs.
  • A large 30 lb bag offers convenience and better value for households with one or more dogs.

Pros

  • Real lamb is the first ingredient, appealing to dogs who prefer this protein and offering a quality foundation for the recipe.
  • The large 30 lb bag size is economical for owners of large breeds or multiple dogs.
  • The absence of corn, wheat, and soy is a significant plus for dogs with sensitivities to these common grains.

Cons

  • The price per pound is slightly above the median for its category, so it may not be the best fit for budget-focused shoppers.
  • Kibble size may not be ideal for all breeds; very small or toy dogs might find it difficult to chew.
  • Contains grains (rice), making it unsuitable for dogs requiring a completely grain-free diet.

Best for

This lamb and rice formula is an excellent option for adult dogs of various breeds and sizes that thrive on a poultry-free, grain-inclusive diet. It is particularly well-suited for owners who prioritize natural, non-GMO ingredients and want to avoid common fillers like corn and wheat. Given the bag size, it's a practical choice for large-breed dogs or multi-dog households.

Feeding guide

Feeding amounts can vary significantly based on a dog's age, activity level, and metabolism. As a general guideline, most adult dogs need roughly 1/2 to 1/3 of a cup of dry food per 10 pounds of body weight each day. This total amount should be split into two separate meals. Always have fresh, clean water available. It is critical to consult the specific feeding chart on the product packaging for the most accurate serving sizes and to adjust as needed to maintain a healthy body condition.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lamb-based food a good choice for my dog?

Lamb is an excellent protein source for many dogs. It provides essential amino acids for muscle development and is often a good alternative for dogs that have sensitivities or allergies to more common proteins like chicken or beef. It's also highly palatable for many dogs.

Is this food grain-free?

No, the Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Brown Rice Recipe is not grain-free. It purposefully includes brown rice as a key carbohydrate source. This makes it a "grain-inclusive" formula, which is suitable for the vast majority of dogs that do not have a specific grain allergy.

What is the benefit of a large 30 lb bag?

Purchasing a large 30 lb bag is generally more cost-effective, resulting in a lower price-per-pound compared to smaller bags of the same food. It also means fewer trips to the store or less frequent online orders, which is a convenient benefit for owners of large breeds or multiple dogs.

What does "Natural Choice" mean?

Brands use terms like "natural" to signify that the food is made with ingredients from nature and does not contain artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. Nutro specifies their formula is made with non-GMO ingredients and avoids fillers like corn, wheat, and soy, aligning with this philosophy.

How much should I feed my adult dog?

Always follow the feeding chart on the bag, as it is tailored to this specific food's calorie content. As a general starting point, you can estimate about 1/3 to 1/2 cup of food per 10 lbs of body weight per day, divided into two meals. Adjust this amount based on your dog's activity level and whether they are maintaining a healthy weight.

Is this recipe suitable for puppies?

No, this specific formula is designated for "Adult" dogs. Puppies have different nutritional requirements for growth and development, including higher levels of protein, fat, and specific minerals like calcium. You should look for a food specifically labeled for puppies or "all life stages."
