Overview

Purina Pro Plan's Small Breed Weight Management formula is a specialized dry food crafted to help small-breed adult dogs achieve and maintain a healthy body condition. This 6 lb bag contains a protein-rich, fat-reduced recipe designed to support lean muscle mass while promoting fat loss. The kibble is appropriately sized for smaller jaws, making it easy for little dogs to chew. As a "weight management" formula, its primary goal is to deliver satisfying nutrition with fewer calories compared to standard maintenance diets, assisting dogs who may be prone to weight gain due to lower activity levels or breed disposition.

Best for

This recipe is ideal for adult small-breed dogs (under 20 lbs) who are less active, prone to weight gain, or have been advised by a vet to lose a few pounds. Its formulation is tailored to the metabolic needs of smaller dogs requiring calorie control.

Feeding guide

A general guideline for adult dogs is to feed approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of a cup per 10 pounds of body weight daily. This amount should be split into two separate meals. For weight management, it's crucial to follow the specific instructions on the packaging, as feeding amounts can vary. Always consult the bag's chart and adjust based on your dog's activity level, age, and ideal body condition. Ensure fresh water is always available.

Ingredients & nutrition note

While the exact ingredient list isn't provided, Purina Pro Plan formulas typically use a primary protein source like chicken or lamb, often supplemented with grains like corn, rice, or wheat. These grains provide carbohydrates for energy. As a "weight management" diet, it likely contains higher fiber content to promote a feeling of fullness.

Price comparison

Priced at $3.45 per pound, this 6 lb bag of Purina Pro Plan Small Breed Weight Management sits almost exactly at the median price point of $3.47 for similarly sized bags of dry dog food. It offers a mid-range option, significantly more affordable than the premium and specialty formulas that can cost over $30/lb, while being priced above budget-focused brands.

Frequently asked questions

Is this food suitable for puppies?

No, this is a weight management formula designed for adult dogs. Small-breed puppies have different nutritional needs and require a specific puppy-growth formula to support their development.

Can this food help my dog lose weight?

This food is designed with reduced calories and fat to support healthy weight loss in adult dogs. For best results, it should be used in combination with a proper exercise plan and portion control, as recommended by your veterinarian.

What is the kibble size?

As a "Small Breed" formula, this product features a small kibble size designed to be easily chewed and managed by dogs with smaller jaws and mouths.

My dog has a sensitive stomach. Is this a good choice?

While many dogs do well on this formula, foods with mixed protein sources can sometimes be a concern for dogs with known food sensitivities. It may be best to consult your vet and consider a limited-ingredient diet if your dog has a history of digestive issues.

Does this food contain grains?

Most Purina Pro Plan recipes, especially in their core lines, are grain-inclusive, often using corn, rice, or wheat. If you require a grain-free diet, you would need to look for a specific grain-free formula.

How is a "weight management" food different from a regular "adult" food?

Weight management formulas are specifically designed to have fewer calories and a lower fat percentage than standard adult maintenance foods. They often have higher fiber to help a dog feel full while consuming fewer calories, which aids in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.
