Overview

TRMC Real Meat's Air-Dried Venison recipe offers a unique approach to canine nutrition, distinguishing itself from conventional kibble through its air-drying process. This 10lb offering, conveniently split into five 2lb bags to maximize freshness, is centered on free-range, grass-fed venison sourced and crafted in the USA. The formula is designed for owners seeking a high-protein, grain-free diet for their dogs, leaning on a process that aims to preserve the nutritional integrity and flavor of its primary ingredient. By gently air-drying the meat, the food maintains a jerky-like texture that is nutrient-dense and highly palatable, providing a different kind of mealtime experience that bridges the gap between raw feeding and traditional dry food convenience.

Key features

  • Made with real, free-range, grass-fed venison as the primary protein source.
  • Air-dried cooking process designed to preserve nutrients and create a palatable, jerky-like texture.
  • Grain-free formula, suitable for dogs with sensitivities to common grains.
  • High-protein content to support lean muscle mass and an active lifestyle.
  • Crafted in the USA with ingredients sourced from American farms.
  • Packaged in five smaller 2lb bags to ensure maximum freshness from the first scoop to the last.

Pros

  • Exceptional single-source animal protein from free-range venison.
  • Air-drying is a less-processed alternative to high-heat extrusion used for kibble.
  • Grain-free recipe may benefit dogs with specific dietary sensitivities.
  • Multiple small bags help prevent spoilage and nutrient degradation over time.

Cons

  • Significantly higher price-per-pound compared to most dry foods.
  • The unique, jerky-like texture may not be suitable for all dogs, especially those with dental issues or a preference for crunchy kibble.
  • As a grain-free food, it may not be the ideal choice for all dogs, depending on their specific health needs and veterinary guidance.

Best for

This food is best suited for adult dogs whose owners are seeking a high-quality, high-protein, and minimally processed diet. Its single-protein, grain-free nature makes it a strong candidate for dogs with suspected sensitivities to common ingredients like chicken or wheat. The air-dried format is also an excellent option for those interested in the benefits of raw feeding but who require a more convenient, shelf-stable solution.

Feeding guide

As a nutrient-dense, air-dried food, serving sizes are typically smaller than for conventional kibble. Most adult dogs will generally require about 1/4 to 1/2 cup per 15 lbs of body weight per day. This amount should be split into two separate meals. Always start with the feeding chart on the packaging as the most accurate guide, and adjust the portion based on your dog's age, activity level, and body condition to maintain a healthy weight. Fresh water should always be available.

Ingredients & nutrition note

While the title highlights USA-sourced, grass-fed venison, a full ingredient list is necessary to understand the complete nutritional profile. Air-dried foods often contain a high percentage of meat, organs, and ground bone, supplemented with vitamins and minerals, and sometimes fruits and vegetables for fiber and antioxidants. We always recommend reviewing the full ingredient panel to ensure it aligns with your dog's specific dietary needs and to check for any potential allergens.

Price comparison

This TRMC Real Meat recipe sits at the premium end of the price spectrum. At $17.05 per pound, it is substantially more expensive than the average price of $6.07 per pound for medium-sized bags of dry dog food. While the median price is just $3.47 per pound, this food's cost reflects its specialized air-drying process and the use of high-quality, free-range venison, positioning it as a super-premium choice for discerning owners.

Frequently asked questions

What is air-dried dog food?

Air-dried dog food is a type of minimally processed food where raw ingredients are slowly and gently dried at low temperatures. This process removes water content, making the food shelf-stable while preserving more of the natural nutrients and enzymes found in the raw ingredients compared to high-heat cooking methods like extrusion (used for kibble).

Is venison a good protein for dogs?

Yes, venison is an excellent protein source for many dogs. It is a novel protein, meaning most dogs have not been exposed to it, which makes it a great choice for dogs with food allergies or sensitivities to common proteins like chicken or beef. It is also naturally lean and rich in essential amino acids.

Why is the food packaged in five separate 2lb bags?

Splitting the 10lb total into five smaller, sealed 2lb bags helps maintain maximum freshness. Once a bag of pet food is opened, the contents are exposed to air and humidity, which can degrade vitamins and fats over time. This multi-bag format ensures that each portion of the food is as fresh as possible when you open it.

Do I need to add water to this food?

While it can be served dry right from the bag, some owners choose to rehydrate air-dried food by adding a small amount of warm water or broth. This can enhance the aroma and flavor, making it more appealing to picky eaters, and it also helps increase your dog's daily water intake. Always ensure fresh, clean water is available regardless of how you serve the food.

Is this food suitable for puppies?

The product title does not specify a life stage, so it is most safely assumed to be formulated for adult maintenance. Puppies have specific, critical needs for growth, including different levels of calcium, protein, and fat. We strongly recommend consulting the manufacturer or your veterinarian to confirm if this formula meets the AAFCO nutritional profiles for growth or all life stages before feeding it to a puppy.

Is a grain-free diet better for all dogs?

Not necessarily. Grain-free diets are essential for dogs with diagnosed grain allergies or sensitivities. However, for most dogs, whole grains can be a healthy part of a balanced diet. The decision to feed a grain-free food should be based on your individual dog's health needs. If you have concerns, it is always best to discuss them with your veterinarian.
