Best for

This recipe is specifically formulated for adult, small-breed dogs (typically under 25 lbs) who are either overweight or have a tendency to gain weight easily. It is an excellent choice for owners seeking a premium, multi-protein food to help their less-active companion achieve and maintain an ideal body condition.

Feeding guide

A general guideline for adult dogs is to feed approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of a cup per 10 pounds of body weight each day. This total amount should be split into two separate meals. Always consult the specific feeding chart on the product packaging, as calorie needs vary. Adjust the portion based on your dog's age, activity level, and current body condition to ensure they are losing or maintaining weight appropriately. Access to fresh water at all times is essential.

Ingredients & nutrition note

Nutro Ultra recipes are known for their "superfood blend," which typically includes a trio of proteins like chicken, lamb, and salmon. While we cannot confirm the exact list for this specific bag, recipes in this category often feature a mix of high-quality animal proteins supported by whole grains like brown rice and oatmeal, and a variety of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. This approach aims for balanced, holistic nutrition.

Price comparison

Priced at $4.16 per pound, this Nutro Ultra formula sits above the median price of $3.47 per pound for similarly sized bags of dry dog food. While it is significantly more affordable than the highest-priced specialty options in the category (which can reach over $37/lb), it represents a premium investment compared to the category average. Its price reflects its specialized, weight-management formula and multi-protein blend.

Frequently asked questions

Is this food suitable for a puppy?

No, this is a weight management formula designed for adult dogs. Puppies have different nutritional needs for growth and development and should be fed a food specifically labeled for puppies or all life stages.

What is the benefit of a multi-protein formula?

A blend of proteins (like chicken, lamb, and salmon) can provide a broader range of amino acids, which are the building blocks of muscle. It can also enhance the food's flavor and appeal for picky eaters.

How is 'weight management' different from a regular 'adult' food?

Weight management formulas are typically lower in calories and fat compared to standard adult maintenance foods. They are designed to help a dog feel full and satisfied while consuming fewer calories to support healthy weight loss or prevent gain.

Can I mix this with my dog's current food?

Yes, and it is highly recommended to transition to any new food gradually. Start by mixing a small amount of the Nutro food with your dog's old food, slowly increasing the proportion of new food over 7-10 days to avoid digestive upset.

Why is the kibble size important for small breeds?

Small-breed dogs have smaller jaws and teeth. A smaller kibble is easier for them to chew and swallow, which can improve digestion and make mealtime more enjoyable.

Is this a grain-free food?

Based on the typical formulation of Nutro Ultra products, it is not grain-free. It usually includes wholesome grains like brown rice and oatmeal. Always check the ingredient label if you require a grain-free diet for your pet.
